Join with Avaaz and help ensure the safe and legal resettlement of refugees in Europe
During the first six months of the year, war, conflict or persecution were the reasons most of the 137,000 desperate people made the perilous journey to cross the Mediterranean Sea into Europe. The number of deaths at sea rose to record levels in April 2015, and then dropped dramatically in May and June. EU governments have been voting on an emergency humanitarian plan to save lives and provide safe refuge.
In mid-July, after messages, phone calls, and meetings with key Ministries, EU leaders approved an unprecedented EU wide Migration plan. They have tripled the search and rescue budget for the Mediterranean, and will offer sanctuary to more than 50,000 people escaping war.
Avaaz will continue to push Europe to ensure they increase safe routes into Europe as the best way to address this massive humanitarian crisis.
“Europe has a clear responsibility to help those seeking protection from war and persecution. To deny that responsibility is to threaten the very building blocks of the humanitarian system Europe worked so hard to build. European countries must shoulder their fair share in responding to the refugee crisis, at home and abroad.” – UN High Commissioner for Refugees, António Guterres

How you can help
Join with Avaaz and sign the petition’s call for compassion that will be delivered to the European Commission and all EU Heads of State and Government.
“As concerned citizens, we welcome the Commission’s Agenda on Migration as a first necessary step towards a strong and humane asylum system across the EU. We call on you to urgently adopt a comprehensive plan that saves lives, ensures the safe and legal resettlement of refugees, and establishes a fair and binding system to receive and assist people seeking refuge in Europe. We oppose any military action that hinders rescue efforts or puts those seeking sanctuary at risk.”
