Join with Avaaz and help stop the whale hunt in St. Kitts

What’s happening?

The Icelandic whaling fleet is preparing to leave port to hunt and kill over 150 endangered fin whales as part of their annual hunt. Iceland and Norway are currently the only countries that openly defy the International Whaling Commission’s 1986 ban on hunting whales.

Avaaz campaigns to end the slaughter of endangered whales and to support whale conservation instead.

“Our community already helped push European countries to shun this shameful trade. Let’s now get St. Kitts to stop helping the whalers!” – Avaaz

Avaaz’s efforts

Avaaz is working to stop the whale hunters. A shipment of last year’s whale meat is to be sent to Japan, and the ships will be unable to leave the port if the tiny nation of St.Kitts and Nevis remove their flag.

“As the whalers continue the slaughter, their boss is trying to ship last year’s whale meat to Japan right now. Over 1,700 tonnes are about to be sent through the icy passage between Russia and the North Pole. Tourism is the main pillar of their country’s economy and we can put their reputation on the line by throwing them into our giant global spotlight.” – Avaaz

Avaaz plans to deliver their campaign and petition of over one million voices to the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Timothy Harris, and if he doesn’t respond quickly they will take their campaign to their biggest tourist market – the US, to show them how St. Kitts is supporting the slaughter of these magnificent animals.

Supporting Avaaz

The Wishing Well was established in 2010 to offer children in out-of-home care, such as foster care and residential care, a range of healing and treatment options usually not accessible as a free therapy in mainstream health.

The Wishing Well raises funds to enable children and young people to access developmentally-appropriate and trauma-informed treatments shown to be highly effective in dealing with severe trauma and neglect. These therapies respond to the unique needs of each child and young person.

The Wishing Well is a not-for-profit incorporated charity organisation, established and managed by people seeking to improve outcomes for children and young people in out-of-home care and their families. The Wishing Well recognises the importance of the act of giving. We recognise the significance of the participation of community members and all donations are most appreciated.

The Wishing Well operates ethically, effectively and empathically with a view to achieving quality outcomes and a satisfying working environment, and as such we support organisations that encompass similar ideals.

The Wishing Well gratefully receives donations, funding and resources through bequests, corporate partnerships, fundraising events, grants, online donations and other fund raising activities. Money donated to The Wishing Well enables traumatised children access to healing therapies. Please see our website for more information:
