Join with Animals Australia and help end the brutal duck slaughtering season

What’s happening?

The beautiful wetlands of Victoria, South Australia, the Northern Territory and Tasmania should be safe havens for wildlife. But instead, in autumn and early winter they become a killing field as the duck shooting season begins. Duck shooting maims and kills countless birds each year. An estimated one in four birds shot escape wounded, only to suffer from their injuries; shattered bills, broken bones and internal injuries.

At the moment, Waterbird breeding levels are the lowest on record. ‘Game’ bird numbers are nearly half the long-term average and wetlands are at drought-like lows.

“In 2007 and 2008, waterbird numbers were dangerously low and conditions were dry, so the duck shooting seasons were cancelled in Victoria and South Australia. Now, a survey in Victoria has found waterbird numbers are even lower, but state governments have still permitted a 2015 season — flying in the face of all credible scientific evidence. – Animals Australia

Animals Australia’s efforts

Animals Australia are working to get duck shooting season banned across all states. Duck shooting has already been banned in Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia due to the extreme cruelty to birds.

“There will be no more duck and quail hunting in Queensland … It’s time to ban the recreational shooting of ducks and quail. This is not an appropriate activity in contemporary life in the Smart State.” – Queensland Premier Peter Beatty

Supporting Animals Australia

The Wishing Well was established in 2010 to offer children in out-of-home care, such as foster care and residential care, a range of healing and treatment options usually not accessible as a free therapy in mainstream health.

The Wishing Well raises funds to enable children and young people to access developmentally-appropriate and trauma-informed treatments shown to be highly effective in dealing with severe trauma and neglect. These therapies respond to the unique needs of each child and young person.

The Wishing Well is a not-for-profit incorporated charity organisation, established and managed by people seeking to improve outcomes for children and young people in out-of-home care and their families. The Wishing Well recognises the importance of the act of giving. We recognise the significance of the participation of community members and all donations are most appreciated.

The Wishing Well operates ethically, effectively and empathically with a view to achieving quality outcomes and a satisfying working environment, and as such we support organisations that encompass similar ideals.

The Wishing Well gratefully receives donations, funding and resources through bequests, corporate partnerships, fundraising events, grants, online donations and other fund raising activities. Money donated to The Wishing Well enables traumatised children access to healing therapies. Please see our website for more information:
