Join with Avaaz and help stop the attacks on freedom of expression in Mexico

What’s happening?

Mexican photojournalist Rubén Espinosa was just found tortured and murdered, along with human rights activist Nadia Vera and three other women. Rubén is the 14th journalist killed in the southern state of Veracruz where governor Javier Duarte has made open threats against reporters. Almost none of these crimes have been solved.

The case of Rubén Espinosa has sent thousands into the streets and set off an explosion in the national and global media. Now Gael García Bernal, Salman Rushdie, Christiane Amanpour and hundreds of journalists, writers and artists have signed an open letter demanding justice for journalists in Mexico murdered for doing their jobs.

Avaaz’s efforts

Avaaz is working on putting together an appeal that will hopefully put an end to the attacks on freedom of expression in Mexico. The open letter is doing a small part, but with our help we can drive this issue home.

“The letter is already making waves with the government, but if we add over a million more names, and get it published on the front page of Mexican media, we can drive it home and show that people from every country in the world stand with the freedom of expression fight in Mexico.” – Avaaz

Supporting Avaaz

The Wishing Well was established in 2010 to offer children in out-of-home care, such as foster care and residential care, a range of healing and treatment options usually not accessible as a free therapy in mainstream health.

The Wishing Well raises funds to enable children and young people to access developmentally-appropriate and trauma-informed treatments shown to be highly effective in dealing with severe trauma and neglect. These therapies respond to the unique needs of each child and young person.

The Wishing Well is a not-for-profit incorporated charity organisation, established and managed by people seeking to improve outcomes for children and young people in out-of-home care and their families. The Wishing Well recognises the importance of the act of giving. We recognise the significance of the participation of community members and all donations are most appreciated.

The Wishing Well operates ethically, effectively and empathically with a view to achieving quality outcomes and a satisfying working environment, and as such we support organisations that encompass similar ideals.

The Wishing Well gratefully receives donations, funding and resources through bequests, corporate partnerships, fundraising events, grants, online donations and other fund raising activities. Money donated to The Wishing Well enables traumatised children access to healing therapies. Please see our website for more information:

How you can help

You can join in the efforts to stop the attacks on freedom of expression in Mexico by adding your name to the petition.

“We demand a full and independent investigation into the murders of the journalist Rubén Espinosa, human rights activist Nadia Vera, and three other women in Mexico City. The governor of Veracruz State, Javier Duarte, should be investigated thoroughly and without delay. We also urge an immediate review of the procedures established to protect reporters’ lives, and to make a swift commitment to guarantee and protect freedom of expression in Mexico!” – Avaaz
