Join with Oxfam and say no to land grabs

What’s happening?

Australia’s Big 4 Banks — the ANZ, Commonwealth Bank, NAB and Westpac — are backing agricultural and timber companies accused of land grabbing in developing countries. They have backed companies that have contributed to illegal logging, forced evictions, inadequate compensation, food shortages and child labour. These companies are forcing local people from their homes and farms without proper consent or compensation. This is leaving communities homeless and hungry.

“From PNG and Cambodia to Indonesia and Brazil, our banks have backed companies accused of forcing people from their land. This involvement has also resulted in billions of dollars of exposure for everyday Australians who have their money in accounts with these banks, or who own bank shares directly or through their superannuation funds.”

– Oxfam Australia’s Chief Executive Dr Helen Szoke

Oxfam’s efforts

Oxfam are a global movement of people working hard to fight poverty and injustice. One person in three in the world lives in poverty. Oxfam is determined to change that world by mobilising the power of people against poverty. Oxfam’s ultimate vision is a just world without poverty. A world in which people can influence decisions that affect their lives, enjoy their rights and assume their responsibilities. A world in which everyone is treated equally. They work with partners and communities to find practical, innovative ways for people to lift themselves out of poverty and thrive.

Supporting Oxfam

The Wishing Well was established in 2010 to offer children in out-of-home care, such as foster care and residential care, a range of healing and treatment options usually not accessible as a free therapy in mainstream health.

The Wishing Well raises funds to enable children and young people to access developmentally-appropriate and trauma-informed treatments shown to be highly effective in dealing with severe trauma and neglect. These therapies respond to the unique needs of each child and young person.

The Wishing Well is a not-for-profit incorporated charity organisation, established and managed by people seeking to improve outcomes for children and young people in out-of-home care and their families. The Wishing Well recognises the importance of the act of giving. We recognise the significance of the participation of community members and all donations are most appreciated.

The Wishing Well operates ethically, effectively and empathically with a view to achieving quality outcomes and a satisfying working environment, and as such we support organisations that encompass similar ideals.

The Wishing Well gratefully receives donations, funding and resources through bequests, corporate partnerships, fundraising events, grants, online donations and other fund raising activities. Money donated to The Wishing Well enables traumatised children access to healing therapies. Please see our website for more information:

How you can help

Join the campaign to stop Australia’s banks making people hungry and homeless.

We call on the big banks to show Zero Tolerance for Land Grabbing and:

  • Understand and report on their exposure to deals that could cause land grabbing
  • Adopt a public policy of Zero Tolerance for Land Grabbing
  • Advocate in the finance sector for responsible lending practices to address land grabbing
  • Ensure justice and restitution for the communities already affected by land grabbing
