Join with Avaaz to help save the 500 year old ancient forest in South Korea

What’s happening?

Right now, Olympic organisers in South Korea are developing part of an ancient forest, half a millennia old, into ski facilities for the 2018 Games. It’s shortsighted, illogical and worst of all, irreversible. Once the precious forest is gone, it’s gone forever.

The International Olympic Committee laid down a mandate that this event should be a “Green Olympics” built and operated by principles of sustainability. Let’s launch an enormous global outcry from every country participating in the Winter Olympics, and shame the International Olympic Committee to live up to their ideals.

Avaaz’s efforts

Avaaz launched a petition and when it reached 1 million signatures, they took out massive ads in front of the Korean Environment offices and on the subway so that they were overwhelmed by the message and would be forced to stop the destruction. Despite this public pressure, Olympic organisers cleared a portion of Mt. Gariwang for a ski slope. Avaaz are pushing the IOC to commit to upholding principles of sustainability so that this type of devastation never happens in the name of the Olympics again. The Korean government has steamrolled through this plan, including rejecting an offer to host some events in Japan to stop the destruction.

Supporting Avaaz

The Wishing Well was established in 2010 to offer children in out-of-home care, such as foster care and residential care, a range of healing and treatment options usually not accessible as a free therapy in mainstream health.

The Wishing Well raises funds to enable children and young people to access developmentally-appropriate and trauma-informed treatments shown to be highly effective in dealing with severe trauma and neglect. These therapies respond to the unique needs of each child and young person.

The Wishing Well is a not-for-profit incorporated charity organisation, established and managed by people seeking to improve outcomes for children and young people in out-of-home care and their families. The Wishing Well recognises the importance of the act of giving. We recognise the significance of the participation of community members and all donations are most appreciated.

The Wishing Well operates ethically, effectively and empathically with a view to achieving quality outcomes and a satisfying working environment, and as such we support organisations that encompass similar ideals.

The Wishing Well gratefully receives donations, funding and resources through bequests, corporate partnerships, fundraising events, grants, online donations and other fund raising activities. Money donated to The Wishing Well enables traumatised children access to healing therapies. Please see our website for more information:

How you can help

The Environment Ministry has never experienced anything like the global outcry that Avaaz can unleash. If we launch an enormous campaign from every country participating in the Winter Olympics, we can shame the Korean authorities so that this never happens again.

“We call on you to show leadership for environmental protection and ensure that all measures are taken to save Korean forests. We call on you to deny permits to clear old growth forests, which cannot be replaced or restored.”
