Join with Unicef to stop famine and save lives
What’s happening?
Continuous war and drought have left children facing deadly famines in Somalia, Nigeria, Yemen and South Sudan. Famine leaves families facing extreme food shortages, and in these regions one third of children are already acutely malnourished and people are starving to death.
In Nigeria, Boko Haram’s violence is forcing farmers off their lands and crushing the food supply. In Yemen, ruthless attacks on ports are preventing communities from importing food, while two years of war have left the country’s health system on the verge of collapse. In South Sudan, conflict has forced families to flee from their homes, assets and livelihoods, leaving parents unable to buy food for their children. In Somalia, a severe drought has left crops and livestock withering into the dirt.
Unicef’s efforts
Children are already dying from malnutrition, hunger, thirst and disease but we can join with Unicef to stop the worst of this unfolding catastrophe. UNICEF teams are working around the clock to save as many lives as they can as fast as they can. But without more supplies of therapeutic food and medicine, their best efforts will not be enough. They have less than half of the funds they need to get the job done.
How you can help
UNICEF needs you now. Together we can provide life-saving nutrition, water and medical care to save children’s lives.

The Wishing Well foundation
The Wishing Well was established in 2010 to offer children in out-of-home care, such as foster care and residential care, a range of healing and treatment options usually not accessible as a free therapy in mainstream health.
The Wishing Well raises funds to enable children and young people to access developmentally-appropriate and trauma-informed treatments shown to be highly effective in dealing with severe trauma and neglect. These therapies respond to the unique needs of each child and young person.
The Wishing Well is a not-for-profit incorporated charity organisation, established and managed by people seeking to improve outcomes for children and young people in out-of-home care and their families. The Wishing Well recognises the importance of the act of giving. We recognise the significance of the participation of community members and all donations are most appreciated.
The Wishing Well operates ethically, effectively and empathically with a view to achieving quality outcomes and a satisfying working environment.
Support the Wishing Well
The Wishing Well uses its funds to help children in need access all manners of developmentally-appropriate and trauma-informed treatments. The Wishing Well takes referrals for any child/young person in out-of-home care in NSW. Applications are assessed by qualified personnel and on a case-by-case basis. The decision to fund an application is affected by the following:
- Funding availability
- The support the child/young person has to access the proposed therapies
- The capacity and willingness of the Carer Household to support the child/young person
- Assessment, which recommends and supports the proposed therapy as relevant to meeting the particular needs of the child/young person
The Wishing Well gratefully receives donations, funding and resources through bequests, corporate partnerships, fundraising events, grants, online donations and other fund raising activities. Money donated to The Wishing Well enables traumatised children access to healing therapies. Please see our website for more information:
Join with Save the Children and support the Mosul Emergency Appeal
What’s happening?
Children in Mosul have had to flee their homes when life under ISIS rule became impossibly dangerous. The military offensive to drive IS out of Mosul continues to impact children and families in catastrophic fashion. Mosul families are in desperate need of assistance, whether inside the city or in areas of displacement. Residents are warning of an unfolding crisis, as children are drinking unsafe water and eating polluted food. They face the grim prospect of bombs, crossfire and hunger if they stay – or execution and snipers if they try to run.
Samer had no option but to flee, leaving his mother and siblings behind. He left his home in Mosul with his cousins and elder brothers and walked between the buildings until they reached a point where they waited for someone to come to pick them up and take them to the other side. But when the guy came and saw that there were so many people, he refused to take them, saying they will be spotted by ISIS and probably won’t be able to cross. They were left stranded between the destroyed buildings, until they figured out where to go. They walked for a few hours in the dark until they reached the military area where they were transferred to the camp.
Save the Children’s efforts
In the camp, they were able to get a message to their mother that she had made it out safely and now they were in another camp. Save the Children were able to bring Samer’s family to his camp and now they are reunited.
How you can help
Since the start of the Mosul response, Save the Children has provided psychosocial support for 13,246 children through Child Friendly Spaces (CFS) located in various camps. Child Friendly Spaces offer children psychosocial support to help them overcome the psychological difficulties and traumas caused by living amid conflict.

Join with Greenpeace to stop oil drilling in a whale nursery
What’s happening?
The Great Australian Bight supports thriving marine ecoystems and is home to countless unique species – most are found nowhere else in the world. Sharing the Bight’s waters are endangered southern right whales. Almost hunted to extinction in the 19th century, their population is still recovering. On top of imminent threats to their hearing from Seismic blasting, an oil spill in the Bight could devastate their survival. Oil and whales simply don’t mix.
Greenpeace’s efforts
Greenpeace is an independent campaigning organisation that uses non-violent direct action to expose global environmental problems and to force solutions which are essential to a green and peaceful future. Their goal is to ensure the ability of the earth to nurture life in all its diversity. Their core values are;
Independence: they do not accept money from governments, corporations or political parties.
Bearing witness: their peaceful protests work to raise awareness and bring public opinion to bear on decision-makers.
Non-violent direct action: they strongly believe that violence in any form is morally wrong and accomplishes nothing.
Desperate oil companies are looking to ever more extreme and dangerous locations to drill, in a reckless bid to exploit oil that we can’t afford to burn. From the pristine Arctic to the majestic Great Australian Bight, people have begun to break the stranglehold of Big Oil. But we still need your help to kick them out for good. Together, we can stand up to greedy oil companies like Statoil and Chevron.

Help Save the Children stop children being robbed of their childhood
What’s happening?
Save the Children have conducted a report into the eight main reasons that children are robbed of their childhood. Childhood ends far too early for millions of children around the world, and the impact is often felt for the rest of their lives.
The eight main reasons why children are robbed of their childhood are marriage, pregnancy, child labour, malnutrition, lack of education violence, conflict in their home town and death.
Save the Children’s efforts
Save the Children have programs are designed to tackle the issues that limit childhood. By supporting Save the Children, you can help make sure children get a healthy start in life, an education, protection from harm and a better chance of a bright future. Save the Children are also calling on world leaders to value every child’s right to survive, thrive and be protected by following through on the commitments they made under the Sustainable Development Goals.
How you can help
Every child has the right to a childhood – a time in life to learn, play, grow, develop, and feel safe and protected. Join with Save the Children and take action today by signing the petition.

Join with Save the Children to help build schools in Guatemala
What’s happening?
María del Mar in southwestern Guatemala has recently become home to a group of indigenous people who had lost their homes during decades of civil war and land rights protests. They were resettled there by the government, who started building them a school two years ago, however all that was built were the foundations and the walls had never got more than waist high. Now, they are in need of houses and a school for their children.
The community worked together with a NGO (non-governmental organisation) to build a school that children could attend every day, without fear or danger. The architects brought their technical knowledge and could talk to the community about safe site selection, while the community could share their knowledge of the local hazards. They used this community-based approach to build the school to make sure the schools that are built are spaces to not only learn, but to keep children safe from danger.
How you can help
Save the Children have resources that help with learning how to use a community-based approach to build schools in communities such as María del Mar. Save the Children and Risk RED, with funding from the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR), have developed educational resources on how to involve the local community when assessing and building schools. Resources include a Safer Schools website, videos, tools, case studies and manual, available in English, Spanish, Arabic, Nepali and French.
