Join with Save the Children to help children in crisis

What’s happening?

Luganville is a town on the island of Espiritu Santo in Vanuatu with a population of just over 16,000, making it the second biggest in the country. But almost overnight, the population has increased by half. At the end of September, when the volcano on the nearby Ambae Island threatened to blow, a state of emergency was called and every resident was evacuated – now many are in and around Luganville, living in temporary accommodation, waiting until it’s safe to go home.

Save the Children’s efforts

Save the Children has worked in Vanuatu since 1984 and their teams have responded to emergencies here before. In 2015, they helped children and families affected by Cyclone Pam, which damaged and destroyed thousands of homes and schools. Save the Children is setting up Child Friendly Spaces for children at multiple evacuation centres, so they have somewhere to play, spend time with other children and cope with the experience of evacuation. Volunteer teachers from Ambae are helping us run activities to get kids moving, thinking and working together.

How you can help

Save the Children teams are doing all they can to support children and families who have been evacuated from Ambae. You can make sure they’re always ready to help when children need them by donating to their Children in Crisis fund;

The Wishing Well foundation

The Wishing Well was established in 2010 to offer children in out-of-home care, such as foster care and residential care, a range of healing and treatment options usually not accessible as a free therapy in mainstream health.

The Wishing Well raises funds to enable children and young people to access developmentally-appropriate and trauma-informed treatments shown to be highly effective in dealing with severe trauma and neglect. These therapies respond to the unique needs of each child and young person.

The Wishing Well is a not-for-profit incorporated charity organisation, established and managed by people seeking to improve outcomes for children and young people in out-of-home care and their families. The Wishing Well recognises the importance of the act of giving. We recognise the significance of the participation of community members and all donations are most appreciated.

The Wishing Well operates ethically, effectively and empathically with a view to achieving quality outcomes and a satisfying working environment.

Support the Wishing Well

The Wishing Well uses its funds to help children in need access all manners of developmentally-appropriate and trauma-informed treatments. The Wishing Well takes referrals for any child/young person in out-of-home care in NSW.  Applications are assessed by qualified personnel and on a case-by-case basis.  The decision to fund an application is affected by the following:

  • Funding availability
  • The support the child/young person has to access the proposed therapies
  • The capacity and willingness of the Carer Household to support the child/young person
  • Assessment, which recommends and supports the proposed therapy as relevant to meeting the particular needs of the child/young person

The Wishing Well gratefully receives donations, funding and resources through bequests, corporate partnerships, fundraising events, grants, online donations and other fund raising activities. Money donated to The Wishing Well enables traumatised children access to healing therapies. Please see our website for more information:

Join with Unicef to become a Global Parent and help children all over the world

What’s happening?

Disaster, war and poverty stop too many children from surviving their first 1,000 days of life. Your support can change the story for the world’s most disadvantaged children. What happens in a child’s first 1,000 days can shape their entire life. To give every child the best possible start, Unicef needs to be there as soon as an emergency strikes. They need to cross battle lines and climb mountains to reach children in the world’s most dangerous and remote communities. But they can’t do it alone.

Unicef doesn’t receive any money from the UN. They rely on monthly donations from a passionate group of supporters called Global Parents. From right here in Australia, they help their teams reach vulnerable children in 190 countries. Every month, Global Parents donate to bring children the essential supplies that save lives and shape futures: vaccinations, blankets and clean water. 72 cents from every dollar they raised in 2016 went directly to their work for children.

Unicef’s efforts

UNICEF is the United Nations Children’s Fund, a leading global humanitarian and development agency that works to uphold the rights of every child. Established in 1946 in the aftermath of World War II, they now operate in more than 190 countries and territories. Their work aims to help all children — especially the most disadvantaged and marginalised— to lead safe, healthy lives and realise their full potential.

How you can help

Becoming a Global Parent is one of the most powerful actions you can take for the world’s children. All it takes is a small, ongoing gift to protect children from killer diseases, bring them back from the brink of malnutrition and stand by them when a disaster doesn’t make the news.

Join with Save the Children to end child trafficking

What’s happening?

For most of us, such cruelty is impossible to imagine; selling a child into a living nightmare of torture, fear and sexual abuse. Child traffickers, violent gangs and sexual predators all prey on children who are alone, sleeping on the streets. This is no place for a child. Children are forced to live on the streets for various reasons. Some are escaping violence at home, others have no home at all. They are all being forced to grow up too fast.

Save the Children works in Nepal to stop girls being trafficked. They work with parents, teachers, the police and community leaders to educate them about trafficking; why it happens, how to identify victims of trafficking and how to refer cases to NGOs. They teach children about trafficking, child protection and child rights – as well as what to do when the dangers become real.

Save the Children’s efforts

Save the Children is one of Australia’s largest aid and development agencies dedicated to helping children. They work hard to protect children from harm and help them access quality education and health services. With more than 90 years working with children, they are at the forefront of saving children’s lives when disasters strike and create lasting change for children and their families through their long-term development programs.

How you can help

With your support, Save the Children can reach more children and protect them from the dangers of life on the streets.

Join with Unicef to protect children in the Pacific

What’s happening?

Children in the Pacific are seven times more likely to die before their fifth birthday than Australian children. In Kiribati, it is up to 14 times. Too many children are dying before they reach one year of age from preventable causes. They do not have access to education, clean water, or even a toilet and are also at risk of violence in their home or school. The East Asia and Pacific region contains one quarter of the world’s children, however a lack of funding compounded with difficult to access islands mean these children face deadly risks that pose little to no threat to children in Australia.

Your donation will go towards funding essential healthcare, vaccinations and clean water programs that will improve the lives of children in countries such as Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Kiribati and Fiji. No other children’s rights organisation has the reach or the credibility that Unicef does with governments, communities and partners. Together, we can help reach as many children as possible.
