Join with Unicef and take the pledge to listen to children for World Children’s Day
What’s happening?
World Children’s Day 2017 was on the 20th of November. It is the chance for children to raise their voices and celebrate their rights. The perfect way to support the children you know is to tell them you’ll always take them seriously and listen to their concerns.
Every child has the right to speak up and be heard, because children are experts in their own lives and because you want every child to speak up with confidence and know their opinions matter.
Unicef’s efforts
Unicef is the United Nations Children’s Fund, a leading global humanitarian and development agency that works to uphold the rights of every child. Established in 1946 in the aftermath of World War II, they now operate in more than 190 countries and territories. Their work aims to help all children — especially the most disadvantaged and marginalised— to lead safe, healthy lives and realise their full potential.
How you can help
Join with Unicef and take the pledge to always listen to children.
“I pledge to listen to children;
- Because I believe in a world that values every child.
- Because I recognise young people have important things to say about their homes, schools and communities.
- Because I support every child’s right to speak and be heard.”

The Wishing Well foundation
The Wishing Well was established in 2010 to offer children in out-of-home care, such as foster care and residential care, a range of healing and treatment options usually not accessible as a free therapy in mainstream health.
The Wishing Well raises funds to enable children and young people to access developmentally-appropriate and trauma-informed treatments shown to be highly effective in dealing with severe trauma and neglect. These therapies respond to the unique needs of each child and young person.
The Wishing Well is a not-for-profit incorporated charity organisation, established and managed by people seeking to improve outcomes for children and young people in out-of-home care and their families. The Wishing Well recognises the importance of the act of giving. We recognise the significance of the participation of community members and all donations are most appreciated.
The Wishing Well operates ethically, effectively and empathically with a view to achieving quality outcomes and a satisfying working environment.
Support the Wishing Well
The Wishing Well uses its funds to help children in need access all manners of developmentally-appropriate and trauma-informed treatments. The Wishing Well takes referrals for any child/young person in out-of-home care in NSW. Applications are assessed by qualified personnel and on a case-by-case basis. The decision to fund an application is affected by the following:
- Funding availability
- The support the child/young person has to access the proposed therapies
- The capacity and willingness of the Carer Household to support the child/young person
- Assessment, which recommends and supports the proposed therapy as relevant to meeting the particular needs of the child/young person
The Wishing Well gratefully receives donations, funding and resources through bequests, corporate partnerships, fundraising events, grants, online donations and other fund raising activities. Money donated to The Wishing Well enables traumatised children access to healing therapies. Please see our website for more information:

What’s happening?
Millions of children become sick or die because they don’t have access to basic health services or proper nutrition. Treatable diseases like pneumonia, diarrhoea, measles and malaria, as well as HIV/AIDS and neo-natal conditions that occur during or after childbirth are the biggest causes of child deaths. The health and survival of mothers is critical. A child whose mother dies in childbirth is much more likely to die than a child whose mother survives.
Save the Children’s efforts
Save the Children is one of Australia’s largest aid and development agencies dedicated to helping children. They work hard to protect children from harm and help them access quality education and health services. With more than 90 years working with children, they are at the forefront of saving children’s lives when disasters strike and create lasting change for children and their families through their long-term development programs.
To reduce the transmission of AIDS and HIV to newborns and the infection of young people, Save the Children raise awareness on how to stay safe and support families. In 2013, they provided more than 1850 education sessions, and peer-educator sessions which reached more than 4600 male and female sex workers through their HIV and AIDS program in Papua New Guinea.

Join with Unicef to help children in Yemen
What’s happening?
Yemen is the Middle East’s poorest country – a place where children are 12 times more likely to die before their fifth birthdays than in Australia. In March 2015, violence escalated into a brutal war that has plunged most of the country’s children into crisis. This is one of the deadliest wars on earth and has killed more than 1,400 children.
At least six children are killed or injured every day in Yemen’s conflict. They’re collateral damage. They’re even targets of war. They’re recruited to fight at as young as ten years old.
Unicef’s efforts
Unicef is the United Nations Children’s Fund, a leading global humanitarian and development agency that works to uphold the rights of every child. Their work aims to help all children — especially the most disadvantaged and marginalised— to lead safe, healthy lives and realise their full potential.
How you can help
Unicef teams are doing everything possible to overcome the obstacles in Yemen: setting up new supply hubs, using local sailing vessels and chartered flights and working with local partners to reach children cut off from humanitarian access. They are working to reach 323,000 children with urgent treatment for the deadliest kind of malnutrition – but they rely on emergency gifts from generous donors to make it happen.

Join with Save the Children to help keep children like Tadila out of child marriages
What’s happening?
When Tadila was just 14, she told her mother and father that she wouldn’t marry the man they’d chosen for her. She is now 18 years old and has finished high school and wants to be a nurse. Tadila found the strength to pursue her dreams through listening to a revolutionary radio program in northern Ethiopia called Save the Children’s Radio Listening Program.
The Radio Listening Program is a series of radio shows designed to amplify the voices of women and children, raise awareness about early marriage and other harmful traditional practices, and increase the number of women and children accessing healthcare. Listeners of the program learn that marrying and having babies too young increases a girl’s risk of fistula – a painful and debilitating condition caused by childbirth – and leaves them without opportunities or an education. This knowledge, supported through our work with community leaders and schools, gives girls the confidence to talk to their parents about marriage, or find support among their peers and community to change their fate.
Save the Children’s efforts
In four years, the program has established 195 listening groups, with programs specifically designed for children, women, men and people with disabilities. In that time, more than 1,600 child marriages have been cancelled, because knowledge does create power for change.
