Support Save the Children’s Christmas Hunger Appeal today

What’s happening?

When children are undernourished, they have no energy to play. Without enough nutritious food, a child has less hope of improving their life; they get caught in a cycle of poverty – trapped by hunger.

You can join with Save the Children to help support children, through their Christmas Hunger Appeal. Your support can help prevent hunger from happening in the first place, by:

  • providing families with enough highly nutritious food and healthcare to treat an undernourished child and giving them the strength to build long-term health.
  • educating families about preparing healthy food and practicing proper breastfeeding techniques via home visits and case management for newborns and vulnerable children.
  • training local staff in poor communities to treat, refer and protect families from the threat of disease and malnutrition.
  • promoting good practice and increasing quality standards around water, sanitation and hygiene.

Save the Children’s efforts

Save the Children is one of Australia’s largest aid and development agencies dedicated to helping children. They work hard to protect children from harm and help them access quality education and health services. With more than 90 years working with children, they are at the forefront of saving children’s lives when disasters strike and create lasting change for children and their families through their long-term development programs.

The Wishing Well foundation

The Wishing Well was established in 2010 to offer children in out-of-home care, such as foster care and residential care, a range of healing and treatment options usually not accessible as a free therapy in mainstream health.

The Wishing Well raises funds to enable children and young people to access developmentally-appropriate and trauma-informed treatments shown to be highly effective in dealing with severe trauma and neglect. These therapies respond to the unique needs of each child and young person.

The Wishing Well is a not-for-profit incorporated charity organisation, established and managed by people seeking to improve outcomes for children and young people in out-of-home care and their families. The Wishing Well recognises the importance of the act of giving. We recognise the significance of the participation of community members and all donations are most appreciated.

The Wishing Well operates ethically, effectively and empathically with a view to achieving quality outcomes and a satisfying working environment.

Support the Wishing Well

The Wishing Well uses its funds to help children in need access all manners of developmentally-appropriate and trauma-informed treatments. The Wishing Well takes referrals for any child/young person in out-of-home care in NSW.  Applications are assessed by qualified personnel and on a case-by-case basis.  The decision to fund an application is affected by the following:

  • Funding availability
  • The support the child/young person has to access the proposed therapies
  • The capacity and willingness of the Carer Household to support the child/young person
  • Assessment, which recommends and supports the proposed therapy as relevant to meeting the particular needs of the child/young person

The Wishing Well gratefully receives donations, funding and resources through bequests, corporate partnerships, fundraising events, grants, online donations and other fund raising activities. Money donated to The Wishing Well enables traumatised children access to healing therapies. Please see our website for more information:

Join with Unicef to give a life-saving gift this Christmas by sending a ‘Play and learn’ bundle

What’s happening?

You can give a gift that will have a real impact by sending a ‘Play and Learn’ bundle through Unicef. Your thoughtful gift for a loved one is a life-changing gesture for a child in need. Unicef Inspired Gifts respond to the real and changing needs of children around the world. The ‘Play and Learn’ bundle is designed to set 5 children on a lifelong journey of learning and play. It contains 50 pencils to spark their creativity, 5 essential textbooks, 5 skipping ropes for some healthy fun, and 5 brightly coloured school bags to make going to school even better. The most basic of items can make a huge difference in children’s lives and set them up for the future.

Unicef’s efforts

Unicef is the United Nations Children’s Fund, a leading global humanitarian and development agency that works to uphold the rights of every child. Established in 1946 in the aftermath of World War II, they now operate in more than 190 countries and territories. Their work aims to help all children — especially the most disadvantaged and marginalised— to lead safe, healthy lives and realise their full potential.

Unicef, together with partner organisations, distribute pre-packaged, life-saving supplies to displaced families on the move. Since the first wave of internal displacement in Iraq in July 2014, Unicef and partners have reached more than two million people – nearly half of whom are children – with life-saving supplies. In May 2016, UNICEF distributed 9,200 kits. The displaced families who benefited from the distribution were those in critical shelter arrangements such as informal camps, unfinished buildings, and school buildings.

Join with Save the Children to help millions of children from around the world access education

What’s happening?

UNESCO estimates that around the world, 57 million primary-school aged children are not in school. It could be because they live in an area of conflict, there aren’t enough teachers, they can’t afford books or uniforms, or they have to work to support their family.

Education is a path out of poverty for many children and their families. Save the Children works to support access to quality education for all children – girls and boys – no matter where they live.

In emergency situations where the education system is unable to function as normal, Save the Children establishes temporary learning centres and provides safe environments for children to learn and play.

Children fleeing the Rohingya crisis urgently need your help. Join with Save the Children to help

What’s happening?

The Rohingya Crisis is the fastest-growing humanitarian emergency in the world today. A major escalation of violence in Rakhine State, Myanmar, has forced more than 600,000 Rohingya people to flee to Bangladesh – adding to 200,000 who had fled earlier conflict. More than half the refugees – upwards of 350,000 – are children. The United Nations calls it “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing”.

Save the Children is on the ground providing food, water and shelter, safe spaces for children, and hygiene kits to stop disease spreading among already vulnerable people. They’re also helping to reunite unaccompanied children with their families.
