Join with Amnesty International to stop the bombing of people in Eastern Ghouta, Syria
What’s happening?
An area in Damascus countryside, no bigger than 100 km2, has been home to 400,000 people trapped under siege by Syrian government forces since late 2012, suffering severe shortages of food, water, medicine and other crucial supplies. The situation in Eastern Ghouta worsened in November 2017, as the Syrian government – backed by Russia — tightened the siege and escalated its bombardment campaign, deliberately targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure including hospitals and markets. The people of Eastern Ghouta have been trapped in a cruel siege for nearly six years and are now being attacked daily, killed and maimed by their government. Children and elderly people are dying of malnutrition and lack of medication.
Amnesty International’s efforts
Amnesty International are putting together a petition to put global pressure on the Syrian and Russian governments to end the attacks and lift the siege on Eastern Ghouta immediately. You can add your message to the cause;
“Mr. Putin and Mr. Assad, you have the power to end this tragedy. I am calling on you to ensure that the Syrian government immediately ends all attacks on civilians and civilian structures, and lifts the siege to allow humanitarian aid into Eastern Ghouta.”

The Wishing Well foundation
The Wishing Well was established in 2010 to offer children in out-of-home care, such as foster care and residential care, a range of healing and treatment options usually not accessible as a free therapy in mainstream health.
The Wishing Well raises funds to enable children and young people to access developmentally-appropriate and trauma-informed treatments shown to be highly effective in dealing with severe trauma and neglect. These therapies respond to the unique needs of each child and young person.
The Wishing Well is a not-for-profit incorporated charity organisation, established and managed by people seeking to improve outcomes for children and young people in out-of-home care and their families. The Wishing Well recognises the importance of the act of giving. We recognise the significance of the participation of community members and all donations are most appreciated.
The Wishing Well operates ethically, effectively and empathically with a view to achieving quality outcomes and a satisfying working environment.
Support the Wishing Well
The Wishing Well uses its funds to help children in need access all manners of developmentally-appropriate and trauma-informed treatments. The Wishing Well takes referrals for any child/young person in out-of-home care in NSW. Applications are assessed by qualified personnel and on a case-by-case basis. The decision to fund an application is affected by the following:
- Funding availability
- The support the child/young person has to access the proposed therapies
- The capacity and willingness of the Carer Household to support the child/young person
- Assessment, which recommends and supports the proposed therapy as relevant to meeting the particular needs of the child/young person
The Wishing Well gratefully receives donations, funding and resources through bequests, corporate partnerships, fundraising events, grants, online donations and other fund raising activities. Money donated to The Wishing Well enables traumatised children access to healing therapies. Please see our website for more information:
Join with Oxfam to help end poverty in Rwanda
What’s happening?
The repercussions of the terrible genocide of the 1990s – where more than a million people lost their lives – are still felt in Rwanda today. Those who survived are gripped by poverty, many living on less than $1.25 a day. They urgently need help to build a better future. Together, we can provide Rwanda’s most vulnerable families with skills and resources that will help improve their lives, health, and future.
Oxfam’s efforts
Oxfam are a global movement of people working hard to fight poverty and injustice. One person in three in the world lives in poverty. Oxfam is determined to change that world by mobilising the power of people against poverty. Oxfam’s ultimate vision is a just world without poverty. A world in which people can influence decisions that affect their lives, enjoy their rights and assume their responsibilities. A world in which everyone is treated equally. They work with partners and communities to find practical, innovative ways for people to lift themselves out of poverty and thrive. Oxfam sees a future in which no one lives in poverty. Join their movement for change and help people help themselves in the fight against poverty.

Join with Unicef to end violence against children now
What’s happening?
Keeping every child safe from violence is a huge challenge and Unicef can’t do it alone. They need your help. In Papua New Guinea a shocking 75% of children experience some form of physical abuse. Unicef help them receive emergency medical care, counselling, legal assistance, re-integration and social support. In Laos, children with disabilities are particularly vulnerable to violence and abuse. That’s why Unicef are focusing on improved services and family-based care for children with disabilities. Prevention is the key to ending violence against children for good. In Cambodia, where half of the children regularly experience violence, they’re working with local leaders to prevent, identify and respond to child abuse and exploitation. In Myanmar, they’re working with government and community to make sure children who survive violence have access to medical, legal, social and counselling services, including in conflict areas.
Unicef’s efforts
Unicef is the United Nations Children’s Fund, a leading global humanitarian and development agency that works to uphold the rights of every child. Established in 1946 in the aftermath of World War II, they now operate in more than 190 countries and territories. Their work aims to help all children — especially the most disadvantaged and marginalised— to lead safe, healthy lives and realise their full potential.

Join with Unicef to help save malnourished children around the world
What’s happening?
We live in a dangerous world. Every day, children face violence, disease and hunger. They’re forced to flee their homes and denied an education. It’s easy to feel powerless against the swell of global crisis and poverty. When a child has malnutrition, every day counts. Early detection could save a child’s life. That’s why Unicef trains community health workers to identify malnutrition as soon as possible. One of their best tools is a simple plastic tape which measures the circumference of the upper arm. If a child falls in the red zone, they have severe acute malnutrition and they have to act fast.
Unicef provides millions of children in need with life-saving vaccines, mosquito nets, and nutrition support; safe drinking water and basic sanitation; education; and protection from exploitation and abuse. They depend on donations from us as they are wholly funded by voluntary contributions.
How you can help
Unicef health workers know how to bring a child back from the brink of deadly malnutrition. They have the global network to respond as soon as children need us in every region of the world. But they can’t do it alone. Join with Unicef to help children around the world beat malnutrition;

Join with Save the Children to end the war on children
What’s happening?
Approximately 350 million children live in areas affected by conflict. In places like Syria and Yemen, fighting has continued for years, and some children don’t know anything else. With the right support, children can recover from their experiences – but more needs to be done to protect them from the horrors of conflict. Between 2005 and 2016, there have been 15,735 attacks on schools and hospitals. In 2016, life-saving aid was blocked from getting to those who need it 1,104 times. At least 10,068 children were killed or maimed in conflict in 2016 – this number is probably just the tip of the iceberg.
Save the Children’s efforts
Save the Children is one of Australia’s largest aid and development agencies dedicated to helping children. They work hard to protect children from harm and help them access quality education and health services. With more than 90 years working with children, they are at the forefront of saving children’s lives when disasters strike and create lasting change for children and their families through our long-term development programs. They have programs in 31 countries, including Australia, where they work in every state and the Northern Territory. With the generosity of more than 120,000 Australians, they support millions of the hardest-to-reach and most vulnerable children and young people around the world.
How you can help
Join with Save the Children to call for the following;
- Stop putting children at risk by investing in peacekeeping, conflict-prevention and training for military forces on how to keep children safe in conflict.
- Get all states and actors to uphold their commitments to international law and avoid using explosive weapons in populated areas.
- Introduce stronger monitoring and reporting systems to track child casualties and hold perpetrators to account.
- Make sure funding is available to rebuild children’s lives when they’ve been wrecked by conflict – including mental health support.
